Sandwich Panels

Sandwich construction is a process in which you ‘sandwich’ a core material between two skins such as carbon fiber or fiberglass. This use of separating the structural skins with a core material offers greater strength properties than that of the skins alone. By increasing the core thickness, you can increase the stiffness of the sandwich without substantially increasing weight and cost.

Carbon Fiber Plain Weave/Honeycomb

Carbon Fiber Plain Weave/Honeycomb

ACP’s Carbon Fiber Plain Weave/ Honeycomb sandwich panels are manufactured by bonding two layers of self-adhesive carbon pre-preg to a honeycomb core.  The plain weave panel consists of 2 PCF density, 3/16 cell honeycomb core in 1/8”, 1/4” or 1/2” thicknesses with a single layer of 3K plain weave carbon on each side.  The resulting composite structure offers a high strength-to-weight ratio and rigidity-to-weight ratio. The panel is the lightest weight sandwich panel offered by ACP.

ACP’s Carbon Fiber Unidirectional/ Honeycomb sandwich panels are manufactured by bonding two layers of unidirectional carbon fiber pre-preg to a honeycomb core. The unidirectional panel consists of a 2 PCF density, 3/16 cell honeycomb core in 1/8”, 1/4 or 1/2 thicknesses with two layers of unidirectional carbon fiber (layed up 0/90 degrees) on each side.  The resulting composite structure has an extremely high strength-to-weight ratio and rigidity-to-weight ratio.

ACP’s Carbon Fiber 8 Harness Weave/ Honeycomb sandwich panels are manufactured by bonding a single layer of self-adhesive carbon pre-preg to a honeycomb core.  The 8HS weave panel consists of 2 PCF density, 3/16 cell honeycomb core in 1/4” thicknesses with a single layer of 8HS weave carbon on each side.  The resulting composite structure offers a high strength-to-weight ratio and rigidity-to-weight ratio.

ACP’s Fiberglass/ Honeycomb sandwich panels are manufactured by bonding a single layer of fiberglass pre-preg to a honeycomb core. The fiberglass honeycomb panel consists of a 2 PCF density, 3/16 cell honeycomb core in 1/8”, 1/4 or 1/2 thicknesses with single ply of an 8oz., 8Hareness Satin weave Fiberglass pre-preg on each side. Once these skins have been bonded to either side of the honeycomb, the resulting composite structure has extremely high strength-to-weight and rigidity-to-weight ratios.

ACP’s Carbon Fiber / End Grain Balsa Panels are manufactured by sandwiching an End Grain Balsa core between two layers of unidirectional carbon fiber pre-preg and an epoxy film adhesive.The carbon fiber balsa panel consists of an end grain balsa core in 1/8” or 1/4" thicknesses with two layers of unidirectional carbon fiber (layed up 0/90 degrees) on each side to provide stiffness in both directions and an epoxy film adhesive to promote bonding.  The panels are ideally suited for applications where parts are bolted to the panels and maximum stiffness and crush resistance is required.

These panels demonstrate high impact resistance and high compressive properties and are lighter and stiffer than plywood of similar thicknesses.

ACP’s Fiberglass / Foam Panels are manufactured by sandwiching a foam core between a single ply of Fiberglass pre-preg.  The fiberglass foam sandwich panel consists of a 6 lb. /cu. ft. foam core in 1/8” or 1/4 thicknesses with 8oz., 8Hareness Satin weave Fiberglass pre-preg on each side. These panels demonstrate light weight and high compressive properties and are lighter than balsa core panels.
